Referendum on the Twenty-Eighth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty of Lisbon) Bill 2009

A referendum on a proposal to amend the Constitution to allow Ireland to ratify the Lisbon Treaty was held again on 2 October 2009.

A similar question as was asked in June 2008 was asked: Do you want Ireland to ratify the Lisbon Treaty?

The Lisbon Treaty itself had not been changed since 2008. However, some decisions had been made since the June 2008 referendum which changed the legal and political context in which this referendum was being held.

An Independent Guide was published in booklet form and distributed to all homes in the state. This guide contains a short description of each proposal.

The Commission also published an extended version of the guide which contained further information.
