Constituency
Mayo, Galway West
Dear Members of the Electoral Commission,
Mayo Fine Gael believe it is of paramount importance that the Mayo County boundary be reinstated.
The new constituency of Galway West has had detrimental effects on the people of South Mayo. The inclusion of this region in the Galway West constituency has diluted its identity and disregarded the natural hinterland of South Mayo with the rest of County Mayo.
The results of the 2022 Census are expected to reveal a rise in the constituency’s population to the tune of 6,378. This increase of 5% of population highlights the need to reassess the current Mayo constituency boundary.
Considering these population increases and the potential to reinstate the county Mayo boundary, the Mayo constituency should be reinstated with five TDs. Many communities such as Cong, Cross, the Neale, Kilmaine, Shrule and Glencorrib need to be brought back to vote in Mayo for the next general election.
Thank you for the opportunity to make a submission on the future of our county. I request that An Coimisiún Toghcháin strongly consider the points raised in this submission.
Yours sincerely,
Finian Bourke
